Zero DSR – I crashed the loan bike!
I’m very sorry to report that having borrowed the Zero DSR for long term test from those nice people at Zero Motorcycles, I’ve had a crash and rendered the bike unrideable! Luckily I’m unhurt but having not come off a bike on the road before this was a bit of a shock. In this video I explain what happened….unfortunately my long term review and the answers to your many questions will have to wait…

Crikey – less than a day since I published this one and I've had over 700 comments! Sorry if I've not managed to reply to yours specifically and thanks very much for all the good wishes, very much appreciated!
TMF, falling off a motorcycle is similar to a “rites of passage” event, therefore, welcome to the club!
I sincerely hope you are OK and on the mend. Maybe you slid on a patch of diesel or gravel – both are nasty stuff. I nearly lost my GL1100 on a newly resurfaced road that was covered in loose gravel chippings. I could have sworn the bikes frame was made of elastic as the bikes wheels where going in different directions. Luckily I keep the bike upright, but it was a close run thing!
Remember – the Zero DSR can be replaced, TMF cannot be. Ride safe sir.
Sometimes things just inexplicably go wrong. It's just a bike, no worries. Glad you didn't get squished by a passing harley or some other truck.
Unfortunate but the main thing you suffered no injuries. Traction control on bike like this would be a good thing. You would be amazed how much you sub consciously listen to the exhaust sound to help your reflex reactions when riding a motorcycle
Glad to hear your OK TMF, could you comment on which gear you were wearing as in either leather or textile gear.
Again glad to see your up and about!!!
Obviously this a test ride bike, but this why its smart to get crash bungs for your own bikes. The amount of hassle you save from having them is worth it in the end.
My brand new Monster 821 fell off the back of a transport because the driver didn't tie it down properly. Only thing that was scuffed was the crash bungs, crash bar ends and a foot peg. They all did their jobs and saved the bike from needing a complete rebuild.
Glad you're ok..that's what matters. I haven't scrolled down the entire list of responses so forgive me if this has been asked already….what tyres are on the bike?….the reason I ask is that on my NC750 I have Dunlop Trailmax and they're useless in the wet/damp..(loads of threads on tinternet)….could this be a combination of tyres and lots of torque?…just a thought.
Great that you are OK. Total respect for manning up in public. This is a huge opportunity for the company to get behind you and make the necessary changes to improve the bike. If they grasp this chance their sales can only benefit.
Sorry to hear mate …..Well if its any consolation on my first adventure on the WR250R I did the same thing bike just disappeared to the right and I went left nothing hurt…..thanks to the body armour….Glad your ok mate I enjoy your bike vids take care kind regards Phil
The Zero doesn't have Traction Control? That's really surprising because one of the things electric bikes have is a LOT of torque that's available immediately… that's great when you're in a straight line wanting to get moving but you don't want all those torques messing about with your rear wheel mid-corner. Most riders are used to gas engines where torque winds up slowly, meaning a touch of throttle mid-corner can be applied – not so with electric bikes with full torque available right from go. Electric bikes really need TC.
Glad you're ok! With all that torque, traction control really would be useful.
There needs to be way I’m more videos about crashing etc. It’s like the unspoken in the biking world.
Glad you are ok mate. It’s so easily done.
i think the first thing to do is replace those horrible looking tyres the moment you buy it , anyone agree?
Glad you are OK. Quite a few of us will have done something similar. Cold tyres on a winters day maybe contributed?
Its not that long ago that bikes didn't have traction control and I wonder whether it's fair to blame the bike. Perhaps we are getting too used to rider aids?
A couple of dents and pops, possibly not as bad as the opening commentary. Take it to the dealer, sharp intake of breath, to follow, then the well tested phrase "I'll cost you a few Bob". Thankfully rider will make future appearances.
The proud new owner of a freshly crashed Zero DS.
Hi, running a bit late this week, really sorry to hear of your mishap, I can only imagine how you feel. You walked away from it, this is a blessing anyway. I fully understand your ride home akimbo, in my youth I twisted the handlebars on a Honda CD175 and I bent the handlebars on my Mates TS185 Suzuki. Longterm this may be a blessing for zero, they need to think about traction control, you are hardly a hooligan rider and given your recent training in Spain, you were not out on the first ride of the season, (rusty). Are you thinking of changing your Name to The Missenden Prophet, the Missenden Messiah may offend. You, at least brightened up the sad lives of your trolls. Your taking care, so stay safe
Glad to see you are OK, It happens to all of us at sometime mate! Was it the torque, cold tyres or just grotty road? Was looking forward to the review of this special bike, hope it hasn't put you off!
PS…….I think they call that Cosmetic damage!
Good to hear you're alright.
Happens to the best of us! I unfortunately went for same sort of slide a week ago.. 🙁 Luckily my gear saved my bacon as well! But has been an expensive one. New helmet, gloves and bike being picked up on Friday for repairs. This just shows why gear is sooo dam important as well! I escaped with 1 cracked rib few bruises and a tiny cut. My helmet on another note.. well the bin enjoyed it! Stay safe, look forward to seeing you back out on it hopefully 😀
That needs a set of bars and it’s good to go.
Glad to see you’re ok. I hope you still get to keep the bike to test.
G'day mate! Sorry to hear this but very happy that you were relatively unhurt. Take care.
Glad you're ok. Bikes and gear and gear can always be replaced. As well as the incredible torque, I think those dodgy looking off road tyres may have played a part… Hopefully Zero will let you continue reviewing their bike, as I for one would be most interested to hear your long-term thoughts on the bike.
I know guys that ride bikes in worse shape than that every day, bent bars and all. I thought you was going to say there's electrical damage to the main battery or something.
That instant torque is a possibility and a very interesting Theory. If the power was to come on too hard could definitely cause that to happen. What kind of tires does it have?
Mostly cosmetic. It will be up and running in no time. Glad you are ok.
At least you're ok that's the main thing.
What a good video! I know the circumstances are not pleasant, but your honesty and candour in explaining what happened are a testament to your character. I’m pleased that your gear did its job properly and that you’re OK. More power to your elbow Sir (only not the sore one, the other one!)
It happens mate. Don’t worry about it.
I'm a regular follower of your videos, which I thoroughly enjoy, in sunny Australia. Accidents happen and a low speed fall on a bike is one of those things really, given that you only have two wheels to maintain contact with the road. Just really glad that you're OK and not seriously hurt – your personal safety and health are the two most important things in life for you and your loved ones. Motorbikes can be repaired, usually humans can be also, but sometimes with great difficulty. Take care and thanks so much for the ongoing reviews 🙂
Terrible luck, glad your ok. Bikes can always be repaired or replaced. Don't beat yourself up over it
Shit happens MF, as long as you're OK is all that matters . Metal's replaceable, don't see how it's not the bikes fault though. Only three reasons you came off. 1, you were going too fast.( you said you wasn't and I believe you ) 2, the tyres are crap / dodgy road surface 3, why too much power at the point of acceleration . Lesson for all new riders, full face helmet every time, imho .Again glad you OK .
I watch all of your videos and I really enjoy them from the USA. Sorry for your fall and I am glad you weren’t hurt.
Easily done. I’d put it down to traction control. Them electric bikes torque is higher than my new blade. Which I brought after seeing your review and I looooove it so thanks tmf 👍🏻hope your all mended now
Sorry to hear about your spill, these things happen, best wishes fella.
It just goes to show that even the best people can come unstuck. I blame those knobbly tyres. Lol. Minimal damage to the bike and thankfully none to TMF. Glad you’re OK.
This was always going to happen.
As long as the forks and the frame/motor are straight and good it is not totaled…
Those tyres are dog shit and the thing needs traction control. Not your fault ! Let's hope the company realise this and sort it before someone gets hurt bad . Its constructive feedback but shame you had to take a slam for it.
Id actually put some blame on those tyres. They wont help.
Gutted for you. Glad your okay. My initial reaction was wondering whether the high levels of torque was a factor. It's not like your an inexperienced rider.
No big deal! You are OK and the minor damage can be easily fixed. Cheer up!
electric bikes have a lot of torque in whole range of revs, got to be careful…
Glad you’re ok.
Sorry to hear about your accident but the most important thing is that you're OK. Bikes can be repaired/replaced, you can't. Take care of yourself!
Replace the helmet! Do not continue using it.
