Indian PowerPlus Power Plus 1917 998 cc side valve V- twin
http://www.yesterdays.nl/indian-1917-powerplus-1000-p-1818.html The Indian PowerPlus engine was a design of Charles Gustafson, who had already earned fame as an engine designer at the Reading Standard company before he was approached by the Indian management.
His task was to design a powerful, robust, reliable and production friendly engine to replace the old F-head V-twin design of Oscar Hedstrom. The resulting 61″ side valve PowerPlus introduced in 1916 was an immediate success and this model is still one of the most coveted American vintage motorcycles.
http://theselvedgeyard.wordpress.com/2009/11/28/indian-americas-first-motorcycle-the-golden-powerplus-era/ A brief primer on the Indian Powerplus–
1907 was a major milestone year for Indian– for it’s when the iconic American motorcycle company introduced the first of its V-twin engines. They continued to improve upon the design, and marked themselves as leading innovators when in 1911 Indian introduced the next generation of the Powerplus– OHV (overhead valve), four-valves-per-cylinder racers. In 1916, Indian ushered in their widely popular 61 cu.in. (998cc) flathead V-twin. The powerful engine distributed its power through a three-speed, hand-change gearbox, with foot-operated clutch and all-chain drive.
The side-valve engine design of the Indian PowerPlus proved to be a tough-as-nails workhorse, and in the hands of the new generation of motor-heads and speed-demons of the day– it was force to be reckoned with on any road or racetrack.
http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2010/05/01/hmn_feature11.html Indian Motorcycles survived for over 50 years by keeping a step ahead of the competition (chiefly Harley-Davidson) and remaining innovative. They could do this because George Hendee and Carl Hedstrom recruited some of the best engineering minds of that time who continued to keep Indian on the cutting edge of technology well after both founders had retired and moved on.
Two of these people were Charles Gustafson and Charles Bayley Johnson, and they played a direct role in the production of Indian’s Power Plus series of motorcycles.
Johnson was one of Indian’s factory racers and was part of the race team that finished first, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th in the Isle of Man TT in 1911. He was later the frame designer for many Indian models, including the Power Plus in 1916. Johnson introduced the first semi-monocoque engine and transmission mated into the bike frame with this design first released in the Scout model.
Charles Gustafson was a mechanical engineer who had worked for the Reading Motorcycle Company in Pennsylvania. Gustafson based the Power Plus engine on the Hedstrom V-twin and his earlier work with a side-valve version of a Peugeot motor that he designed for Reading to invent the Indian 42-degree side-valve V-twin engine, a configuration that is still used today on most two-cylinder four-stroke motorcycles.

I hear the owner of this actually puts quite a few miles on it. I'd love to see it tooling around town on a grocery run.
The unrestored look just adds to the bike's appeal and to think it is 95 years old.
Cannonballer? Would love to see more of this machine – Clymer Manuals On The Lift ?
