How much difference is there between a Canyon superbike with the latest Shimano Dura Ace R9170 Hydraulic groupset, and a bike bought from Ebay for £90?
Matt and Si compete in four challenges: climbing, descending, braking, and time trialling, to see how big the difference is between the two bikes.
Although the differences are pretty big between the two bikes, its not to say that you can’t have a great time on a cheaper bike.

Surely the weight difference itself amounts for a good deal of the time gap, but that's with two guys who weigh, just guessing, less than 70 kg each? With a 100+ kg grizzly bear like me on the bike, probably the difference would have been way smaller, since the relative weight saved by the more expensive bike is less relevant.
Now cheap road bikes are the ones with rim brakes while high end means you get disc brakes.
Bullshit comparison!
I like old bikes. My daily oscillates between a 1986 Cannondale or a 1992 Bridgestone RB-1. Yeah I could probably climb, descend, time trial better on a more modern bike, but would it be as fun? Would it really?
The best type of bike is a "rode" bike.
Great job, guys. Loved this experiment. I would love to see a more scientific version of this with three bikes, low, mid and high level road bikes, but all within reasonable racing performance, say $800, $2000 and $15,000, and make three runs of every task so there can be a more accurate estimate. Also, not sure if it matters, but should not all riders be of the same weight and on par speed wise?
Sorry im not eng speaking. He said "90 pounds"? or meant 9 hundrend
Please, test this one!
Whats the difference? The manufacturers would have you believe that they put more into research and development to justify their outrageous prices. They are greedy and as long as idiots keep shelling out for 3-5k bikes it will not stop.$15.000 for a TdF bikes? Are you for real? I can buy a car for that and think of how much R7D goes into that. Hope that put things into perspective. I ride alu. Have all my life. Its a bit rough but last longer than steel where i live and does not rust.
Anyone know what model Raleigh the cheap bike was?
breaks ? who was doing the typing ?
Nice video, great topic. I would say get what you can afford…..yes I would say that.
Do you bozos always stuff your package…..🤢🤔
Some old (65 years or so) former racer on an old lugged steel bike with nothing more than a 7 cog rear with old Campy – all metal, friction shifters and 32x3X Mavic SSC's routinely trounces nearly any and all younger racers on their plastic fantastic/Shi&mano spin cycle rigs in our area (Colorado – BASE elevation 6,600 feet/2,200 meters)………….. Go figure.
I would love to see a similar comparison between that canyon and a seven or 8 year old CAAD 10 with ultegra
dedededeminishing returns
Can you give me the cheap bike Pls…. i dont have a bike
plz… plz … I'm from Philippines
thanks a lot
I wish I had that Raleigh, it looks amazing.
It hurts just as much? Never mind, then 🙂
Excepted for pro or amateur racing cyclist don't see the reason why people will buy a top bike. It's just to show off that they earn far too much money. A bike for the wall street guy that will be use at 5% top of his capacity.
PS : I like your video to make some maintenance on the bike. I think that I good cyclist must have a minimal knowledge of the bike mechanics. Thanks and go on the good work.
