What It’s Like To Drive RFACTOR 2 With a Direct Drive Wheel – Talk & Drive Review

We continue our series of driving each simulator with the SW 20 / OSW Direct Drive wheel from https://sim-pli.city/ and this time jump into Rfactor 2 to talk and drive about the games FFB and handling with the wheel. If you enjoyed this video and need even more excuses to pummel your bank account check out last weeks video with Assetto Corsa.

  • You said you'd be lapping the ring. Dirty beast!

  • first VR, now DD Wheel …. next step for perfect immersion : MOTION SIMULATOR 😀 and by the way , i love the Megane in rF2 as well 🙂

  • All hail the magic fidgeting wheelcam.

  • wtf did u do with ur wheel cam? its twichy as hell… did u track it? if yes, why??

  • You tube smoothing has made he video crazy hold on untill tomorrow and it should be fixed lol. earth quake !

  • Hi GM✌️✌️, I've been sim racing now for almost a year and I'm looking to get a gaming pc and a direct drive wheel, what do you think of the sim experience v2, and us there a desent place to get gaming pxs from i ain't got time to build it myself, I've just heard miners are selling all the cards lol, 👍👍👍, love ya vids, i am from uk Midlands, budget as possible 💯💯✌️

  • Sim racing needs realistic G forces! Tickle my pickle lmao

  • I might just be a pleb but with my t300 I have to say the forcefeedback makes so much difference in rf2 contrasted with ac that I have barely touched ac since I got rf2, just feel like I understand on a whole other level what's going on with the wheels and the cars in general while driving in it, when I go back to ac it feels like I almost lose a sense that helps me drive slightly better than I would otherwise be capable of, maybe that's just me though, seems FFB is highly subjective.

You're really making me want to upgrade to a direct drive wheel sometime in the future btw >_<

  • I like your videos and your enthusiasm in the commentary so this is meant as feedback rather than criticism. I think you overstate the case for the SW20 in a few places. I'm sure at the price point it is better than consumer wheels costing 1/4 of the price. On the 'lowly' TX458 for example flat spots and tyre wear and overheating are transmitted well through the wheel – even on the console versions now they have the v10 tyres. The wheel centring speed is often to do with running excessive FFB strength. As for RF2 I also find no difficulty feeling the extra grip with live track, feels intuitive like the real track as they rubber goes down. The Fanatec v2 base is smoother and has a few more effects but if it is 10% better that is all it is (oh and my 2 v2 hub servos also failed in days so reliability may well be a huge plus for DD wheels). Both wheels track the in game wheel perfectly on single screen and in VR so I'm not sure where you are coming from with the slow and sluggish wheel comments – TX and Fanatec v2 are more taught than most real car steering wheels.

Your description of the NSX at 13.40ish sounded like you were describing some old muscle car. You are going to be a difficult man to please when you choose your first near-supercar 😉

In the end, I couldn't decide if this video was more SW20 advertorial or post purchase rationalisation.

Good to hear your thoughts all the same and especially your enthusiasm for VR and the way the cars feel – I'm right with you on that. At the moment on the consoles, there is a lot of delight at how AC feels now that it is finally working properly.

Even though we have different opinions, keep up the good work.

  • The "sharp/aggressive punch" is what I dislike about rFactor 2's FFB (on my SW20), and especially with it's FWD cars. But I'm perfectly happy with FFB on all the RWD cars/karts/etc.

  • What was all that with the Windows 95?

  • Has the VR implementation improved since your initial impressions 2 months ago?

  • Do you get massive rattling (or steering wheel shaking) over kerbs with this SW20?

  • I wonder how Karts feel with DD wheel and VR

  • So when will a Dirt Rally FFB settings and how to video come up? Enjoying all the others so far.

  • hi
at the end of the video you show the MMOS setup. I gonna test and use it
but can you explain and show us (maybe a link with a picture) what set for the FFB you use in game ?

  • Do the real life version of these cars have steering as heavy as this? I mean the modern cars have power steering right? So they should be lighter than a DD wheel.

  • Accuforce Pro or OSW? Anyone tested both? Im going for one of them and it seems they are almost the same price so it all comes down to awesomeness i guess, lol. I do think OSW has stronger force and thats one thing of course although Accuforce's force isnt something to be scoffed at. Decisions decisions…

  • but rf2 official tracks are not laser scan..it may be scripted just like iRacing Watkins Glen T9..lel

  • dont agree with the t300 not being fast enough,it can do everything the dd wheels can,yes its slower but its not actually that much of a negative

  • If your thumbs and wrists ever feel at risk though… you must have that ffb set too high, no?

  • Meet me at the grilled cheese sandwich coliseum… I'll be outside waiting

  • Is anyone else watching this channel, desperate for a big AC motor like me?

  • The karts in RF2 load up the FFB strength way too high.  When driving at 1:1 FFB with my OSW, the karts get unbearably difficult to turn when getting near the limit of front lock and grip.  It might be realistic torque "on paper" but the output and end-result is much different – overall FFB-strength output "behavior" is much different to real life.  My arms and chest get way more tired and sore driving extremely similiar karts in real life but the real life karts don't feel like they hit a wall at a certain angle of steering lock…
Not to mention – a general issue with DD wheels and sims – the insanely powerful, constant feeling, of return-spring that wants to constantly spring the wheel back to centre with insane speed as well as force/torque behind it.  It feels like it's a baked-in setting – it's extremely unrealistic to have your wheel always want to return to centre with so much speed and, more importantly, force/torque that it feels like it wants to control you.  It also makes the FFB more static and less "free" because you're just always resisting the wheel's insanely over-powered and over-eagerness to constantly want to "explode" back to centre.  Again, though, it feels like a baked-in, constant spring-force noticeably in every sim.  Even getting snap oversteer wants to snap and "break" your wrists because the wheel acts so instantaneous and aggressively at times, it wants to snap faster than you.  In real-life you have to do the work yourself, the wheel's SAT in real-life won't save slides for you, you have to work the wheel too.

Direct Drive wheels are certainly not all positives, at least not yet.  There is much improving that needs to be done be it from the software (games), wheel software (firmware), the overall FFB "philosophy (we should be going to torque-based FFB systems and not position-based), hardware (our wheels have like 20x, if not more, less rotational inertia than real life wheels due to there also being suspension, tyres. steering column, etc.).  Things are not all rosy for today's DD wheels and sims.

  • Did you have to drill holes in your Simetik cockpit? Got mine today and doesn't seem to match up to any of the holes in my Simetik 🙁

  • SO far after one evening with my new/used OSW small Mige (ioni 1x) I have found Assetto, Automobilista amazing with it and iracing the least impressive on some cars/tracks. Sure a lot better, but not the way it helped in AC and AMS. But that may be some tweaks away. I had a really tough time setting it up (human errors and no instructions till bailed out by the community online).

  • Just tried it with my new to me/used Mige… Wow.

  • Hey Muscles, downloaded the demo the other day, very surprised by the FFB, loved it. Now on wishlist (Steam).

  • Not sure if its my G25 but rFactor feels like the car does weird things. Like its on ice. The grass seems super slick. I have a pretty nice PC setup and FPS pretty much suck at 2560×1600.

  • hello

    thanks alot.
