Burt Munro’s 1920 Indian Scout
This is the 1920 Indian Scout built and driven by Burt Munro. Jay Leno on commentary. Three times during the ’60’s it set the World’s fastest flying mile record for motorcycles under 1000cc at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This is not the reproduction used in the “The World’s Fastest Indian” starring Anthony Hopkins, but the actual bike that set the record. Fortunately this is the second year of the Concours d’Elegance to feature motorcycles on the green. This year they featured the salt flat racers and their contribution to Hot Rodding. I was very lucky to see and hear this amazing piece of history.

Or buy “The World’s Fastest Indian” because it’s a true story. It’s one of my favorites, and surely will not disappoint any gear head. Anthony’s perfectly cast for the role.

What a silly comment at the end.
I had a new boat motor, fired up every time ,when I went to sell it ,guess what…….
Bet jay was like give you what ever you want for it haha
Yeh, Jay leno baught it lol. Bike will last forever with his collection. I like that part
Isso é história !!!!
Mark, I can see you have NO IDEA what it takes to run a highly stressed machine. That bike, in it's original form, might have hit 60 mph. Through Mr. Munro's innovation, it went over 180, 3 times it's original top speed. SO, Mr. Bosworth, let's see what YOU brought to Pebble Beach, and won an award with..??? And, contrary to what has been posted here, Mr. Leno has *NOT* "baught" the Burt Munro Special. I saw it in Central CA with the owners mentioned on the paper ,last month. It is still under the ownership of the Hensley Family Trust…as Ben Franklin said in "Poor Richard's Almanac"…"'tis better to keep one's mouth shut, and be thought of as a fool, than to open it and REMOVE ALL DOUBT"
Running or not…..That is a mechanical Legend….With as much heart and soul as Bert Munro himself had…..Respect.
It seems most people here don't have any comprehension of this machine, nor it's ilk. I would say that this engine was in the sort of order you might expect. ie able to race.
It is a world record holder with tune and gearing that mean it wouldn't run below 30km. and needs a push to get up to that speed you cant drive it anywhere. No one wants to see it reved hard with no load on it.
Such engines only really run at high revs and then only with the right warm up and fuel.
if you have seen any old highly tuned engine you will possibly understand. Think supercharged MG 1100 cc six etc. all when in racing tune not able to do show pony antics. built to run hard at racing speed.
Bert will forever be in our memories.
Bert's bike without the fairing. Running on the road.
What a legend Burt Monroe, and what a bike!
and it is the real bike
My Great Uncle, I never got to see the Indian run as I was a young lad in New Zealand at the time though I did get to see him run his single cylinder Velocete on the Rarangi straight while Burt was staying at my Grandparents house. The old boy used to be married to my Grandmothers sister and its amazing to see the restored Indian today……..I would love to see this bike oneday and the current owner as I remember Burt well and have a few stories of my own about the dear old guy.
Who is the bloke in the suit? Looks vaguely familiar. A car owner,, naah cant be him he only wears denim!
Jay leno
Did he make his own pistons ?
Does anyone know this bike in the video is a replica?
How is it revving?
sounds like they try to start it without gasoline ?
Worlds fastest Indian is the best film I have ever seen
Сука пидары отстанте от мотоцикла Берта Монро не для вас Петухов он его делал
A great design, unorthodox, simple and yet very effective. Creating UNMATCHED speed records with a 40+ year old bike shows the true craftsmanship of this guy.
But the movie (saw it yesterday for the first time) is not convincing: unrealistic, full of anachronistic goofs, presented in a fairy tale Disney style. I wonder how Burt really lived and worked?
The bad and unsuccessful movie raised my curiosity, so I will start researching this guy and his real life and achievements now.
Thanks for letting us hear the thunder of the Indian.
I lived near Springfield for many years, visited the Indian museum and saw the leftovers of the former factory many years ago. I even walked the street, where the first Indian was climbing uphill (next to the Worcester train station). Burt's choice was the best he could make!
Do you think it ever looked this good when he rode it at Bonneville?
This is not burt munros, it is a replicas and there are lots of differences to the motorcycles, this one does not have the triple fin, same paint, and its got a hole in the nose of the vechile, it doesn't have the scratches from when it crashed at the salt flats in Bonneville. The real one from the movie, along with the real bike and real body is in a shop in Invercargill New zealand, it also on that bike in the video has what looks to be as an exaughst pipe on the fin. I know you have put allot of effort into this bike, it looks great and sounds boss, good job
Another interesting video on the Indians restoration,
Its been 'prettied '' up way too much.
best motorcycle sound ever.
The movie about Burt was very very good, and U will be captivated.
Bollocks it's the one. Replica all the way. The original is in Burt's home town of Invercargill in New Zealand.
That bike is not the original Burt Munro Indian that he raced at Bonneville full stop, no matter who narrates it ? Look up the original photos of the bike & also notice theres not 1 real footage of 1961 when he broke the land speed record for bikes under 1,000cc ? cheers 🙂
proud kiwi right here……..go burt go………..
naahhh sneeze.. "bullshit.." and jay didnt say shit
I wish that this mob of clowns would stop messing with the great man's motorcycle and what are they laughing about when it would not run properly. Even the music reminds me of a funeral that I went to once.
According to Indian's website the bike was a 1926.
My Lordy, that bodywork is even slicker that any Airplane of the day! Probably only the Stanley Racer had better aero then! WOW!

This a working replica, the original is in the Hayes Hardware store in Invercargil NZ. It is with his Velocette which are both owned by the Hayes family who were very good friends of Bert Munro.
Towards the end, it was too costly for Bert to ship the whole bike so he had another chassis in the USA and would take the engine back and forth.
