SAI Removal Triumph Tiger 1050 how to
When I did my de-cat and started tuning the bike, it started to suffer from very loud bangs & pops from the exhaust between gear changes and when engine braking. The noise was one thing, but it is quite hard on the silencer – literally knocking the stuffing out of it. It was also producing blue and sometimes white flames on deceleration. This is caused by the SAI which is meant to work with catalytic converters. Non cat bikes (NZ & OZ) have no SAI. So, the SAI on my bike had to go. I show you how I did it, how others have done it, and explore some little known air box quirks on the Tiger 1050 along the way…

Wow, I can see what you meant now. You can see how the principal is the same as the one on my old Kinroad, but that's far more complex and much more dismantling required to get to the pipework.
As for laptops and ECU maps, i'm clearly well out of date, back when I worked officially as a mechanic the onboard computer was the thing that told you the time, :)
Yep, that's why I wanted to do it with my 12k service (needed access to cylinder head anyway). Would not be worth doing just for SAI I don't think.
The laptop thing on bikes is relatively new to me also. This bike is the first EFI bike I have owned that you can access the ECU and modify maps direct. Previous bikes I had to get tuned with Power Commander which is more limiting (piggy back ECU)
Superb work, Mark.
Congrats.
Thanks!
No Tiger videos from you lately, have you sold yours?
Yes, I sold the bike to a close friend.
I hardly ride my bike and decided to stay for my CB750 (1992) that serves perfectly for small trips.
We are online, Mark.
Cheers.
Shame about the Tiger, but at least it is "in the family"! Been looking at your CB750 vids, that thing sounds sick man! Keep safe. :-)
Yes, the Tiger now has a correct and good use.
A great machine.
About the Honda: typical sound of the 80´s 4 cilinders (CBX) with hidraulic valves.
I love it and nobody makes nothing similar.
Almost a 23 year bike in a great condition. ;-)
Hi, I have the same tiger 1050 (2010) and I have also a KN air filter. I have the open exhaust from Triumph can I do the same think on my bike, note that I don't have the programming software. I just want to close the hole ( easy way). It is gone be ok the bike or i will have problems. Thank you!
You can close the hole in the airbox (easy way), but you still need to load a tune for non-sai bike. If you don't load non-sai tune, the o2 sensor will detect richer gas because there is no extra air from sai – and it will try and make the engine run leaner when it is not necessary which could be bad. The software is free – see my TuneECU video. Or you could ask Triumph to load a map for you. Have you done de-cat? If you have not, I would leave SAI in.
Hello Mark, what is your opinion for this accessories ?
sc project.com afm tune
SC Project make nice cans, I like both their Oval High and Oval Low in Carbon and Titanium (not a fan of Stainless Steel – it's heavier). I think you would be happy with any of these cans. Not sure what you mean by AFM Tune tho…
Great work!!! Gracias
Thanks for the great video's, I performed this mod and will also gut the cat, only I'm not sure which map on tune ecu to use after this is all done, the 20546? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi anychance you can email me the map you used. ive a 2009 1050 tiger, with the triumph std aftermarket end can. ill be doing the decat and the sai mod. cheers

Followed this step by step at the weekend on my Speed Triple. The exhaust is so much smoother with less popping and back fires! Thank you for you concise and detailed guide, right down to the tapping tool size and type of bolts to use to plug the valid covers.
Great video! Will definitely try this method.
Could you tell which bolt/thread size you used for tapping the thread?
Great video footage – Thanks for sharing.
