One Piece: Grand Adventure — Buggy the Clown

And we’re back to the world of One Piece, and from here on out, we’ll start down a decidedly more villainous progression. Well, for the most part, anyway.

Okay, I’m going to be honest here…at first I really didn’t care much at all for Buggy the Clown, and at this point, I’m really not sure why that is… Maybe it was because he seemed to be a joke with no real punchline besides “insane monster clown,” which honestly Buggy is none of those things…well, except for the clown part.

It’s weird, because Buggy seems to cultivate this facade of being a really ruthless pirate, but besides being rather decidedly off-kilter and having a real axe to grind with Straw Hat (and a longstanding grudge against Luffy’s hero, Red-Haired Shanks)…I can’t believe I’m saying this…but…he’s really not *that* bad…not good, but he’s not a complete monster either. He’s a pirate clown, so he loots, plunders, takes over a town here or there, and makes merry in his own oddball ways.

I feel like I should also congratulate Buggy for offering such high-caliber ammunition for the game designers to load up for his gameplay depiction. I swear, it’s a really good power he’s got there, and he controls it so well, he might as well be a logia type Devil Fruit user in terms of nigh-invulnerability…even when he got his clock cleaned by the original three Straw Hats, he really only lost because he’s such a hothead and a joker, and from what I hear, he’s only gotten better since then. Good show, noble “monster” clown man!

He also fights in gameplay as a sort of “halfway” between the styles of physical fighters and logia users in that he’s got a lot of close-range proficiency with his daggers, but he’s also able to specialize in projectiles…but instead of an element like logias would produce, it’s…well…his own body, and the forms of his attacks are really only limited to whatever his clownish imagination can devise.

Of particular note is that Buggy’s Chop-Chop Festival actually counts the little projectile chunks as parts of Buggy’s body…which they are, but for gameplay purposes, this means that he can collect items within the area of its effect. This means if you use it near a breakable container, you can gather up all the items it contains, oftentimes actually resulting in a net *gain* in your special meter by scooping up the scattered coins.

Buggy also deserves honorable (I guess?) mention for having one of the absolute strangest Specialty attacks, because they adapted his Chop-Chop Buggy into a bona-fide attack move, although chances are you won’t get to drive him much, since contact with…well, anything will cause the “car” to spin out of control, so hopefully you’ve managed to damage your foe in the process so as not to suffer immediate reprisal.

Unfortunately, the AI can’t really provide the presence of thought and tactical prowess required to use Nami effectively, like with Usopp…if you try to attack head on all the time, you won’t manage to do anything but get yourself beaten to a pulp.
