Guys dont ask why he helped straw hats, cuz we sure know that he is friend of dragon, but ask why he made himself a weapon for the navy.
This says a lot about Vegapunk. Kuma trusted him not to go back on his promise. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being a friend of the strawhats later on.
Remember 2 years ago when Kuma sent everyone flying off and it was to protect straw hats and I believe Kuma was already alliance with revolutionary army and knew Dragon

Seeing this scene animated took a lot of the dignity of it out for me. Seeing him moving and creacking with the electricity sound effects just wasn't as good as in the manga where he looked like one of the robots from Laputa.

If you think about it Kuma actually saved the crew their abilities were very weak if they went to the new world unprepared they would have died
