Matchless is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, with its early history dating back to 1899. What once was the most important motorcycle manufacturer in England ceased operations halfway through the 20th century but the heritage of Matchless Motorcycles did not perish. Revived by Italian businessman Franco Malenotti, Matchless is present at EICMA 2014 with the Model X Reloaded, a bike concept which might just throw a bridge back in time.

One of the biggest questions which still remain unanswered is whether Matchless Model X Reloaded will become a production model or will remain a prototype. Most likely a decision will be made after all the EICMA echoes died out and all the feedback is sorted out but from what we understood from their PR representative at the show, there will be only 100 such bikes built over the next year.

Italian parents, British heritage

One of the greatest fears of those who rejoiced then news that Matchless Motorcycles is once more alive was that it would lose its British DNA. Taking a look at the bike brings in one more reason to smile, as the new Model X Reloaded still retains a massive dose of pure English vibe.

The Matchless Model X Reloaded oozes retro styling, though with a most modern, somewhat futuristic re-interpretation of the classic shapes. Faithful to the 1930’s looks the Model X Reloaded brings in a beefy “Castle” fork, but it sports complete adjustability on par with the rest of the modern machines.

In the rear suspension department, the Model X Reloaded sports two shock absorbers located under the bike. Their action has been reversed, so that the initial compression and damping movement pulls them away from the pivot point instead of pushing them in. You’ve also seen older Buell models with the same technology, haven’t you? Matchless says that this solution reduces the flex under compression and helps for better stability.

The rear section comprises a new lamellar structure which also provides great stiffness and a most interesting sight, especially as the retro solo seat is attached to it. The seat has no less than 6 cm (2.3”) of height adjustment, allowing riders to take full advantage of the two sets of foot controls. In cruiser guise or as a classic road machine with an upright riding position, the Matchless Model X Reloaded looks like real fun.

It’s maybe a bit strange to see a retro bike with such a rich heritage in a modern shape, but the functionality modern times bring in is truly awesome. The handlebar sports 25 centimeters (10”) of vertical adjustment, while the grips can rotate around vertical and horizontal axes. And even the headlights are adjustable! The Matchless creators have also spent a lot to tune the 1,916cc SS Cycle X-Wedge v-twin and the exhausts to obtain the right tonal character.

And since power without control is a very dangerous thing especially on a motorcycle, you’ll probably be just as amazed to observe a huge 12-piston front caliper with forced air cooling, accompanied by a 6-pot unit for the rear wheel!

Of course, since the Model X Reloaded is made completely out of metal, leather and rubber, the weight is considerable. Make no mistake about it, this is a heavy bike. And, if you ask us, that’s how it should be. The price tag you ask? Well, the estimated price the PR representative gave us is around €50,000-€55,000 which is not a lot considering the build quality.
