HTC Vive & Oculus Rift CV1 DETAILED Comparison by UKRifter of VRSpies

UPDATE: I appreciate that using Elite for a demo was not particularly optimal for demonstrating the Vive, in this respect you can disregard (as I stated in my video) these software frame dropping issues as something that WILL be resolved in the future as software titles and the platform matures. My statements around the quality of the devices as a whole and indeed my conclusion remain unchanged.

I play with VR on my weekends and schedule video posts through the week. I am not affiliated with any company. At this time I have access to Oculus Rift DK1 & DK2 HMD Technology. As more VR tech is released I will invest my own money in order to continue to review, compare and contrast. I run this for the love of the technology, I am not paid for my opinion, and as a result my opinions will remain unbiased.

Eh. I'm still going for the Vive. I tried the Rift and loved it. Then I tried the Vive and was absolutely blown away. I DID notice a little less FOV on the Vive for like 5 seconds, but after starting to play it seemed to disappear (same with the SDE).
Subscribed. Great video. However it is odd you are dropping frames in job sim, it should be smooth as glass with a 980ti
I have a 980 ti and Vive. I have not had any issues with any latency or dropped frames in job simulator. Have you seen the problem fixed in a more recent firmware update? Could it have to do with how your lighthouses are mounted or perhaps your graphics driver?
Thanks Chris. After another 1.5 months do you find yourself favoring one system over the other?
Do you think it is worth having both a Rift and a Vive? A lot of people say that they are too similar to have both. I have a Vive right now and a Rift arriving in a few days. I can't return the Rift once I open it and I really don't want to go through the hassle of reselling it (and maybe losing money). I'm a big fan of cockpit simulator games so I could potentially benefit from the Rift's sharpness, comfort, and smoothness, or I could return the Rift and use that money to upgrade my GTX 980 to a GTX 1080 for my Vive.
Hey, UkRifter, you are seriously by far the best reviewer I've seen so far when it comes to VR. I have watched hours of reviews and you are the only one who finally gave me the review I wanted, a review not made by HTC Vive fanboys. A completely un-biased review (in my eyes) and delivered the exclusion of the touch controllers from the review. The second I finished this video I knew you would be my guy for all things VR.
I hope you continue to make more VR videos and help the rest of us understand more things about VR.
PS. You finally convinced me that the Oculus Rift (in the long run) will be better
and by any chance have you tried the razer hydras with the Rift? Cause I've seen people do room-scale VR with it on YouTube.
The Oculus Microphone is better than your Webcam's Microphone.
you call that detailed comparison?! i dont see any lenses comparison! how does it looks from the lenses !!
That was a great review, cheers .
where is your vr cover ? i got mine a few weeks ago and i love em. greez
Please, try to spend more time and adjust your sound's level carefully in your next videos.Actually It is hard to believe in everything you say in this compairsion of two, pretty technically complex devices, considering you have messed up with such a simple thing like a sound adjustment between video cuts.
i think the vr war is over now because of shitty hardware…lol
Very informative review. I do like your 'scale' observations, which esp. in a space sim must be an important factor. A distant star system should 'feel' to be at infinity (and not sticked to a wall:). I'm seriously considering the Rift over the Vive for Elite (and cockpit sims) alone. Cheers, Max
fuckkkkkkk why cant the vive just be good at both D:::::::
Great review Chris. I actually bought a vive and sent it back. Could not deal with the overall display quality in Elite. Now I have a rift coming.
Great video dude very informative and good to see a video that does'nt seem to fanboy the Vive been undecided for weeks and after watching/reading several reviews i've decided to go with Oculus i seriously think Oculus with the touch controllers could be the better headset and at a cheaper price as i cant see touch costing £200 i hve a 2m x 2m space and not bothered by room scale and think with 2x cameras on the Oculus room scale in that size room will be fine
No we don't hate you because you own both but I hate you because you have such a great voice. You should be working for radio! And you have a lovely wife who is as British as they come. Her reply to your superiority comment: "You are hilarious."
Seen a lot of comparison videos. This is the best especially for ppl concerned with visuals.
Great review.
I was thinking about getting the Vive. But now I think I will get the Rift in stead. I want to use with my racing setup and I think the Rift might be the better choice for it.
longest Cv1 vs Vive comparison I've seen so far, by far! nitpicks details etc Great review! The white balance is a bit off though anyway keep it up!
Im thinking about purchasing either of the VR headsets so im doing some research, thank you very much on this review very informative. When you were talking bout god rays apparently it can be a individual Oculus problem.
mfw the audio quality is better when you record with the oculus than when you use your mircrophone xD
i was surprised to hear that UK Rifter's experience with the Oculus rift was a near flawless performance with the 980Ti, considering Oculus considers Maxwell chipsets to be "Catastrophic" for VR.
Thanks for putting this video together – do you use the oculus debug tool with the rift? I'm asking especially about Elite Dangerous but curious about other games too Specifically I'm talking about supersampling with the debug tool vs. using the supersampling in the game.
Can the Oculus Rift DK2 run every game that the regular Oculus can?
