How To Adjust Valves On A BSA Motorcycle | Classic British Spares

Adjusting your valves is a key way to ensure a long lasting engine. When you fail to adjust your valves your valve train and engine performance will suffer and decline. It is essential that you adjust your valves accordingly to your manuals specifications.

For this video, I will be adjusting the valves on a 1969 BSA A65 Lightning. This same process can also be used on most vintage British motorcycles from Triumph, Norton, Matchless, and others.

  • I know it is common knowledge that each cylinder must be at TDC in order to achieve proper adjustment, but just wanted to point this out for the first-timers.

  • best way is to adjust is off of thew "base circle method" . as soon as the exhaust valve opens adjust the intake. rotate engine till intake valve fully opens then is half way closed adjust the exhaust . how we did it at the race shop .. look up comp cams or crane cams for this method it is spot on. if you look at a degree wheel and four stroke timing this is the best way.

  • you can actually alter cam timing with clearance .. by the way this guy at classic is very knowledgable and very helpful .. gave him a heart check and he was cool . i recently;y bought a small item from him and will continue to do so
