Examined! Royal Enfield’s 650 Twin! | Zigwheels
Royal Enfield’s first multi-cylinder engine in almost 50 years is here! The new engine has been built ground up to power RE’s new range of motorcycles. What should you expect from this engine? And what is it made of? We take a close look to see what’s in store!

To me the motor looks fine. Much like an old Enfield twin which, I think, is what they meant to achieve. But 47bhp isn't very impressive. My 1967 BSA 650 Lightning matches this performance. My 750 Commando from 1971 would leave it behind. What has 40 to 50 years given us in development terms?
Why don't they launch hi speed infinity Sr 150 kind of scramblers in India with bigger engine. Its really shame that they launched in Pakistan and not in india. All ugly looking designs for India so sad…
But the big question will be about the quality 😀
Well explained:)
go back to autocar kartikeya, miss those reviews
You mentioned it is a longer stroke engine .. I think it's not , it is over squared engine i.e. Short stroke and that's why red line has increased from 5250 RPM in current bikes to 7100 RPM in this bike.. hope I am correct in analyzing based on the technical specs shown @3:31
Please dont hype RE products. My Himalayan was a great bike when i picked it and then back to back updates and screw ups from RE. Its now stranded for two days with a broken gear box. No techs have showed up yet.
Pls show us a prototype pic of this bike
the question is does RE have cruisers?
I dont think so
hey! Thanks Balaji S and Budding Biker for raising this – yes the engine is an over-square engine. I wasn’t clear enough – the stroke reference is a mixed reference to another story we were working on (linked below). There we have compared the RE650 with other similar engines. You will see that RE has opted to use a longer stroke than the others. The others have more aggressive oversquare engines. Apologies for the confusion. And, thanks for watching.

quality and after sales service is a big issue . I have used the bikes for two years now
Designed in UK n irritating music.since when did 9.5 compression motor became a torque monster – pls stop sucking up to the RE.lastly a great risk at this price point.
Underpowered engine
Sale inki 350 te 500 cc wali biko mei itnii problem ho rohi sala 650 ko sahi karte karte faat na jaye logo ki
its not a long stroke as u said…its an oversquare one
The only problem it have is maintenence issue.. as royal enfield don't have skilled workers in their service station… they are not able to handle single cylinder 500 cc efi issues well… how are they expecting to handle twin cylinder engine??
also the cam chain is in the middle of two cylinder… so how you are going to replace that?? by dis-assembling the whole engine??
Superb commentary! One quick question – considering the engine specs and the chassis weight, what is your best guess on the 0 to 100 acceleration?
Kartikeya u wr best at Autocar…..
Hope we don't have twin piston failure, oil leaks, engine seize and things like that….. Coz Enfield R know for poor reliability esp after the HIMALAYAN fiasco…..
Royal enfield is very dumb in terms of product development….. Years in the business but still struggling to make a decent, refined, reliable engines……. It's not that they R going bankrupt either….. If they can afford a brand like ducati the least I expect from them is to invest heavily in their R & D Hire world-class engineers and come up with a decent bike with super refined engine like a triumph 800 or 1200….
did i hear smoothness?
Rather than the bike design the 648cc engine looks promising on papers with the power and the torque that is offered. Hope the Royal Enfield guys dump the 411cc shitty Himalayan engine in the Indian ocean and fit it with this new born baby 648cc engine to the Himalayan and make the bike a proper Adventure and a Cruising machine. I think that might justify the title 'Built for all roads. Built for no roads'.
kartikeya mann…..it feeel so gud to c u after a long tym…even on zigwheels…..btw….awesome video and great description….keep it up… mann…..
Everything said and done but aren't you expecting the engine to get too hot in a country like India. I am worried since it has not liquid cooling.
ZW, I can see 850cc to 1200cc engines in the future to take on the Triumph Bonneville's etc. The 1200cc engines would be great for the North American market.
I don't get the "hype" here about this "new" engine?? The concept is over 100 years old…Learn to build reliable bikes, which requires, properly educated engineers, preferably in EUROPE, to suck up the philosophy of precision engineering and then near perfect manufacturing. This kind of thinking is part of our DNA. It should become yours as well!
How smooth does the engine configuration appears on papers, I won't invest in any of the RE products. I had the year 2000 RE campus 350 and the bike had nothing to offer me but suffering. I would rather get myself a reliable Triumph than this piece of crap.
