Cherry Coal Mine Scene Nov 20th
A ten-wheeler of the C.M. & ST. P. RR in Cherry IL at the site of the famous coal mine disaster which happened on Nov 13th 1909. The date this photo was taken was Nov 20th on a Saturday. At this time the miners trapped below (280) were all assumed dead. But the following day twenty one survivors were found. They were called the "eight-day men" because of the length of time they spent down in the dark, smoke-filled mine. They survived barely by barricading them selves in with mounds of dirt and rock.
