BSA SummitCorps | Mountain Bike Trail Building | Rock Armoring Technique
Over the course of July 2011, nearly 1,500 Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow volunteers built more than 30 miles of mountain bike trail in the New River Gorge. To learn more about the project, visit http://www.summitblog.org/category/summitcorps/
In this clip, the trail-building instructors — known as “I-Corps” — explain the technique for building durable and rider-friendly singletrack trail in the mountainous forest of southern West Virginia.
The Scouts participated in the project to assist the National Park Service. The biking and hiking trails are located in the New River Gorge National River, about 70,000 acres of forest and river managed by the NPS.
The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) also participated in the project by helping design the trails and teaching the I-Corps trainers about trail-building best practices.
Are you a mountain biker? Then you’ll want to come check out the Summit Bechtel Reserve. The 10,600-acre high-adventure base is right next to the New River Gorge National River and promises to offer unparalleled adventure — including both crosscountry and downhill mountain biking. The Summit will open for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, so don’t miss it.

@n8tureboy Thanks for the shout out. It was pretty amazing to see all the Scouts here in WV putting their backs into it. Cool thing is, that's only the beginning.
Glad-to-have-you-as-a-neighbor right back.
