Bill Costello BMW R100 Cafe Racer motorcycle story
This is a video made by Wes Van Heest originally for the BMW enthusiast blog ultimateklasse.com. If anyone is interested in any details of this build, here is a build thread giving way too much information about every detail of the story behind this project: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=899012
Also, at the end of 2013, BikeExif.com chose this bike as one of the top 10 custom bikes of the year: http://www.bikeexif.com/top-10-custom-motorcycles
and then right after, they selected my bike as the first one in their top 5 BMW’s of the year:
Both articles were quite humbling and this was a great way to end my bike project!
Wes Van Heest has recently shared a higher full HD quality version of the video he made about my BMW café, with me and this is the new version posted here.

Your video is super cool! And your bikes too! Good job! I'm buildng my first bike. Is not a BMW but I am already planing to get an 1980's bmw for my next project! Congrats! I agreed completelly! With passion and patiente you can do whatever you want! And the process sometimes is more enjoyable than the final result!

Hi Bill
I was after some technical advice
The final drive you change so that you could fit
Spoked wheels.
Was it a straight swap or did you have to change any other parts ………..?
I read your information in detail on your bike build but I'm still not to sure .
Just wonder if you can enlighten me
Many thanks
Very cool bike, you can really be proud of it. Greetings from Germany. =)
Unbelievable good, man you can be proud of yourself. I believe that your father with you would be a proud of you
Who else spotted the e46 m3 in his garage? lol
Hi Bill , Beautiful! My 1989 R100RT will be going down the same path. Really love the paint finish.
Your story is an inspiration for me to build my own BMW cafe racer
love it buddy !
Wow !!!!! couldn't agree more with all the compliments well done pal.
Probably every rider understands what you said at the beginning about the feeling you get when you ride a motorcycle. I just recently picked up a Bike again after a long time of no riding and the first time I opened that throttle I got such an endorphine shot and felt "high" that I can only imagine heroin feels like. Made me buy the bike.
Beautiful and perfectly proportioned.
Saving up to buy my first BMW motorcycle to restore and turn in to a cafe racer.
Great inspirational story and video.
Ride safe out there!!
Good job…(nice bike)…
nice build. any plans for more?
Hey Bill,
I'm currently working on an '81 R100 RT. Wondering what exhaust you used on your bike, it sounds great!!
Thanks
Most attempts at cafe racers are butt ugly. This one looks good.
@ 0:51 why are there leaves but no dust in your garage?
Very good taste, to me.
Inspiring.Thanks mate.
Awesome!
That's a beauty! I inherited my dad's old 1982 r100rt, all original (museum bike here in Finland). I've been hoping to modify it to cafe racer too, but lack the skills to fabricate the parts my self.
What a beautiful noise!
That is a fantastic looking bike, and having read build diary online, it sounded like a fantastic project to work on.
I hope one day to build something similar.
Do not hack up old Beemers.
They where never "Cafe racers".
They where tourers, made to take you from A to B.
Fantastic boxer engine.
Built to last.
Great tourer!
"Cafe racer"…NOT!
