Indian is an American brand of motorcycle, originally produced from 1901 to 1953 in Springfield, Massachusetts as the Hendee Manufacturing Company until a change of name in 1928 formed the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company. Indian went on to become the worlds largest motorcycle and in 1911 the factory team claimed the first three places in the Isle of Man TT.
The 1942 741 and 841 models were developed as military motorcycles. The 741 used Indian’s conventional V-twin design, but the 841 had a modified twin and shaft drive intended for desert fighting. Chiefs, Scouts, and Junior Scouts were all used in small numbers for various purposes by the United States Army in World War II, and extensively by allied overseas British and Commonwealth military forces under the Lend/Lease Program. The early version was based on the 750 cc (46 cu in) Scout 640, and compared directly with Harley-Davidson’s WLA, but was either too expensive or heavy, or a combination of both. Indian’s eventual offer, the 500 cc (31 cu in) 741B was not selected to gain a US Military contract.
Indian motorcycles were the brand favoured worldwide by Wall of Death riders. A Indian Scout is the star of probably my favourite film, The Worlds Fastest Indian depicting the true story of New Zealander Burt Munro in getting his ageing and underfunded bike to the Bonneville Speed Week – the rest is history
