This era of the VMAX has 113 HP stock. What makes it pull hard all the way up is the boost valves that open at 8,000 rpm. The 09 and up VMAX puts 174 HP stock. I've always loved these bikes. Glad you finally got to ride one, looks like you had fun on it, even though your legs were pretzels on it. Congrats on the new shop man, nice to see your doing very well.
looks like fun! what is your new address?
I love the VMax. I did notice the oil light flicker during your pull at around 5:42 might be something to look into before it's sold.
Hey Sean, did you know that bike was on the movie called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance?
I've been waiting on this test ride.
I ll reply to all these comments tomorrow. I think I ll make another video tomorrow and hop on the highway
I have always been a huge fan of these. I have one myself. I went over a mild and short hill doing at least 110 in third gear at full tilt boogie and the front end come up at least a foot in the air and I rode it that way for about another 300 ft until I run out of revs. Its the most fun I've ever had on a bike, other than maybe cutting through the dragon tail with it. They handle good but it is deceptive. If you are really cranking on a corner and have all that torque rolling the frame can flex some and make it kind of barely wobble around in position and freak you out a bit. This is by far my favorite bike there is though haha. Thanks for this review I loved your reaction when you opened it up. I have yet to see anyone that hasn't flipped out when those secondaries open up around 5000 rpm or so. The best description I've ever heard of the acceleration is "Wow this thing is pretty fas…..HOLY S&*T!!!!" hah. Those who've run one of these will get what I mean lol
Sean, the problem with the 1st Gen Vmax is that most riders ride it like it is a V-twin. Meaning they don't rev it like an inline 4 cylinder. That bike is made to rev and at 6500 rpm is 4th and 5th gear, the Vboost kicks in making it feel like someone gave you a shove from behind. I'd give my left nut for a 2nd Gen Vmax! Heck at over 60 years old, I don't need both nuts!
Hey Sean, Can you please make a step by step tutorial on how to do a wheelie?
First time you hit the V Boost, you just want to use it all the time. You become a V Boost Slut. 🙂
This bike turbo?
Love your videos bro. I'm not in the market for a bike. Just bought a 2005 FatBoy back in November. However, I'm a subscriber because I love bikes and love your reviews. I pray you much success. Proverbs 3:5
Love all your videos my friend. Is it possible to have some sit on the bike when you do each review so we can see the rider position? Thank you for sharing 🙂
You might have to get your self one for you huh? 🙂
Will this bike beat a 109Suzuki??????
One of my all time favorite bikes. Good video bro!
I'd call it a muscle bike. The actual polar opposite of a cruiser.
Probably don't enter the intersection and stop there. That's where you're deadest. Wait for a break behind that big, fat white line and go through in one motion. Safety first.
"Hopefully we can ride this V-max without running out of gas!"
Famous last words!……loved my old 25th Ani V-max, but its gas mileage was about on par with my old ZX-12……that is to say, bad!
I bought 1989 max brand new as a younger man and I still have . I've made and instead a few parts, the that really sticks out : V-BOOST ENHANER . Open the boost and leave it open. It sounds like a built CHEV. 350 . plus there's a HIMDEL exhaust. 28 years with it and I still won't trade it for any other bike.
I have a 96 and it's by far my favorite bike I've been on!
As far as the handlebar fuel switch there's an explanation; since the vmax has its gas tank underneath the seat it can't use gravity to feed gas through a petcock, so it only uses a strong fuel pump to get it to the carbs. In order to have a functional reserve system Yamaha put a sensor in the gas tank that heats up and is cooled off by the fuel.
So when the tank gets low and the sensor isn't cooled it sends a low gas signal and cuts off the fuel pump. To turn the pump back on you need to turn the handlebar switch from on to reserve
It can be a pain sometimes because if its really cold out the reserve light might not turn on and if it's really hot out the reserve light will go on early
It is NOT A CRUISER! It is a standard.
These are cool bikes but the 09+ is the real power house. All Vmax are cool cruisers though. Never really was super impressed with the Vboost though, to me it's like all the people who get excited over Honda's VTEC. Is it a good system, yea, but it's NOT a turbo in any sense and really isn't anything different than the SRAD system Suzuki has had on their bikes since the late 90s. The 09+ Vmax has a cool intake system though; the velocity stacks essentially get longer or shorter based on RPM range and air flow to maximize power potential at any given RPM on the new FI engine. The new one makes around 190 at the wheel stock! While it doesn't have quite the thrust of my 151whp GSXR 750, the Vmax is still an animal.
The stock V boost kicks in a little late, so I have modified it with a manual override switch to turn the boost on all the time.
yea petrol guzzler
I have an original 1985 that I bought new and it still runs great
I'm 30. what would be a first time cruiser bike to start off with… for abt $5000?
How much did that sell for?
at 6:23 you mention two cruiser bikes that compare, what are they?
I'll take it. Where can I pick it up?
oh boy do these bikes bring back memories I had one of the first V Max's that came out in 1986 I had to get rid of it after a couple years because of the fact that it was just too fast. anyone that has ever heard of throttle overlock or has had that happen to them it puts the fear of god into you! for the few that don't know what that is it's when you turn the throttle and that supercharger kicks in and throws your body back forcing you to hold on for dear life also causing your throttle hand full forward to the point where you are almost out of control. that being said for a JAP bike I got more pussy on that damn bike
I had a V65 magna loved it. but my brothers Vmax would walk away from it.
Magna was a better highway bike tho.
I had the 2002 carbon fiber model, with only 4200 miles
now I'm gonna get the 1985 model
did it pull your arms out of socket? rofl!
It's the baddest
Powerful, however I can imagine that in wet conditions you'd be at a disadvantage.
The problem with the VMax is the lack of tank capacity and the gas mileage. Topping up every 120 miles tends to take the fun out of the experience for me.
Sean, I learned to ride back in the day when I was about 7 years old on a '71 Yamaha GT80. When I got my learners permit at 15 1/2 years old my father bought me a Yamaha Riva 50cc scooter which I rode for a couple years. Later while finishing up High School, I bought my first "big bike" which was a Yamaha Seca 650. That was quite a jump from the little 50cc scooter I had been riding. Anyway, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Yamaha and the venerable V-Max was in it's day a true muscle bike and it remains so today. This bike V-Max was out in the streets creating mayhem making women swoon and children cry long before the Harley V-Rod along. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the ride and found a great home for that bike. Somebody who knows what it is will definitely appreciate it and take good care of it.
The best bike Yamaha has ever made…. You can add Vboost switches to override the boost to happen at lower rpm or set it to permanently on.
I've had my vmax for 12 years. Had many other bikes but I can't bring myself to get rid of her.
My first bike was a Yamaha Virago, love them to bits
those grips make me cringe
💝 the ghost flames on tank.
i want one of those too
this dude sucks at riding holy fuck.
Vboost set right like adding a second engine.
You’re putting on gloves. vMAx must be serious!
