Midtone Study Through Black and White Photography (read description): 38/210

Midtone Study Through Black and White Photography (read description): 38/210

I spent two months this past summer sea kayaking the Pacific Ocean through Alaska’s Inside Passage. Eight of us paddled five hundred and fifty miles weaving in and out of glaciated fjords. We made a new camp every night, pitching our tents on the forest floor. We drank water from the mountain streams. We gathered mussels and caught salmon, scared away bears and dodged whales. We truly experienced the place for what it is and always has been. Being more of a fine art photographer I was surprised upon my return at the number of landscape/ representational images I composed. Upon further inspection I realized that isn’t quite true. I was focusing on the lines, form, value and concept just the same as I always have been. The elements of art occur endlessly but wildly in nature. The challenge is to tame them so your eye doesn’t fly every which way. I chose to represent these eight compositions in black and white for a number of reasons. First and foremost is to forego the distraction of color. Our eyes are naturally drawn to vibrancy which can cause you to read the image in a completely different way. Another reason I chose black and white is to emphasize the mid tones. Having mid tones is having the darkest darks, lightest lights, and everything in between. The key part being “everything in between.” The more mid tones, the more intense the subject appears. In the right conditions, the sky can be a great place to increase your tonal range, which is the case in all eight of these images. I firmly believe that getting an honest, raw experience of a landscape is essential when trying to capture it.

Got a silver Key in the Scholastic art competition for this.

Jim

Jim

Jim struck my eye from down the block, and when it was time for our paths to cross I was determined to capture his portrait and get his story. Just my luck, as he was more then willing to pose for a few photos and chat for the better part of half an hour. Moving to Madison from Milwaukee in 1970, Jim has seen his share of change over the years. One of the most interesting facts he shared with me was that when Sterling Hall was bombed in August of 1970. He managed to sleep through all the ruckus, even though his family lived relatively close to the university at that time. They didn’t have a radio to get the news, so they didn’t find out til the next day in the papers.

As we chatted I found that Jim was a bit comedic in conversation, and this was solidified with a great joke. "What’s green, five miles long, and has a collective IQ of eight?" "The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Chicago" It took me a brief moment to understand the joke, but then it totally made sense and I burst out into a belly aching laughter. He expressed that he was a big fan of "the bright side of life" by Monty Python. A really interesting piece I’d never seen/heard until he told me about it.

As we snapped a few candid photos, Jim had a few suggestions for me to catch the best light. I believe we did alright with the light that was presented to us, and as we parted I wished him well and told him where I’d be placing his photo and my write-up for my 608 strangers project. We may have met as strangers but as I grow further with my photography and meet new people I’ve discovered we all end up to be pretty good friends. Paths cross for a destiny we didn’t even know existed and thus why I love the 100 strangers group. Join up and meet new people, and find some awesome faces you might recognize!

Ariel Square Four Mark II - Pentax 67II - Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 55mm F/3.5 - TMAX 100

Ariel Square Four Mark II
Culver City, Los Angeles County, California

Daniel J. Winter’s 997cc Ariel Square Four Mk II is one of 3828 produced between 1953 and 1958.   He told me he bought it from a friends grandfather.   My guess from the styling is this bike was customized in the early 1970s.

This photo is the first of a series of this bike.

When I was a starving student in my early twenties the Ariel Square Four was one of two types of vintage bikes I wished I could afford.   The other was a Vincent Black Shadow

I took this photo while wandering around Ithaca, NY, at sunset this spring. It’s a beautiful small city flanked by Ithaca College and Cornell University.
