Midtone Study Through Black and White Photography (read description): 38/210

Midtone Study Through Black and White Photography (read description): 38/210

I spent two months this past summer sea kayaking the Pacific Ocean through Alaska’s Inside Passage. Eight of us paddled five hundred and fifty miles weaving in and out of glaciated fjords. We made a new camp every night, pitching our tents on the forest floor. We drank water from the mountain streams. We gathered mussels and caught salmon, scared away bears and dodged whales. We truly experienced the place for what it is and always has been. Being more of a fine art photographer I was surprised upon my return at the number of landscape/ representational images I composed. Upon further inspection I realized that isn’t quite true. I was focusing on the lines, form, value and concept just the same as I always have been. The elements of art occur endlessly but wildly in nature. The challenge is to tame them so your eye doesn’t fly every which way. I chose to represent these eight compositions in black and white for a number of reasons. First and foremost is to forego the distraction of color. Our eyes are naturally drawn to vibrancy which can cause you to read the image in a completely different way. Another reason I chose black and white is to emphasize the mid tones. Having mid tones is having the darkest darks, lightest lights, and everything in between. The key part being “everything in between.” The more mid tones, the more intense the subject appears. In the right conditions, the sky can be a great place to increase your tonal range, which is the case in all eight of these images. I firmly believe that getting an honest, raw experience of a landscape is essential when trying to capture it.

Got a silver Key in the Scholastic art competition for this.
