MILWAUKEE (February 21, 2018) – Harley-Davidson adds to the long legacy of its Sportster motorcycle line with the introduction of the Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special models. The latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company plans to introduce by 2027, these new high-bar Sportsters combine throw-back styling trends from the custom-bike scene with the solid foundation of the Sportster platform and the punchy performance of the Evolution 1200 V-Twin engine.
Since its introduction in 1957, Sportster motorcycles have been repeatedly reimagined, in the hands of both the Motor Company and bike owners: The Sportster as a bobber, a chopper, a scrambler and a café racer; as a hero on flat tracks and drag strips and road-race courses; as an accessible entry-point for first-time riders, and as a custom-of-one cruiser.
“Since its inception, the Sportster has offered the perfect combination of size, power and character that makes it appealing to so many different riders,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson V.P. of Styling & Design. “A Sportster is a relatively easy bike to strip down and reinvent. What we’ve done to create the new Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special is what Sportster owners have been doing with their own bikes for generations.”
New fuel tank graphics distinguish both the Iron 1200 and the Forty-Eight Special, and combine bold color stripes with a formal typeface, color and graphic elements originally popular in the 1970s.
“The art on these two fuel tanks reflect contemporary trends we are seeing on custom bikes and in design in general, a move away from more complex and intricate art to a look that’s very simple and clean,” said Richards. “It’s also important to note that these graphics respect the shape of the fuel tank and in the case of the Sportster, that tank shape is a classic design element in its own right.”

Iron 1200™
The Iron 1200 recipe starts with power. A 1202cc Evolution® 1200 V-Twin engine delivers 36 percent more torque (73.0 ft. lbs. vs. 53.8 ft. lb.) than the 883 Evolution engine that powers the Iron 883, the original urban brawler in the Sportster family. The Iron 1200 brings more punch to the street fight – more power to blast away from green lights and more mid-range to muscle through traffic. More power means more rowdy fun.
The satin-black Mini Ape handle bar is an essential element of the garage-built chopper look that adds instant attitude. This 1.0-inch diameter handlebar offers an 8.75-inch rise, 32-inch spread and 6.5-inch pull back, that opens the rider triangle with a fist-in-the-wind posture. The gloss black speed screen framing the headlamp is a West Coast styling influence that amplifies the attitude of the tall bars, is intended to offer some wind deflection at speed and provides a space for easy personalization. The fast-back Café Solo Seat flows to the rear fender and is shaped to help hold the rider in position when the torque of the Evolution 1200 kicks in.
A classic 3.3-gallon Sportster fuel tank features multi-colored striped graphics that wrap around the tank profile. The dark engine finish helps draw the eyes to the bright tank graphics. Fuel tank paint color options include Vivid Black, Twisted Cherry and Billiard White, always contrasting with the Vivid Black speed screen.
The entire powertrain has been styled with a popular color: black upper and lower rocker boxes, black exhaust and muffler shields, and black timer, primary and derby covers. Chrome pushrod tubes and tappet covers are the only brightwork and highlight the V-Twin engine shape. The Iron 1200 is finished with all-black 9-Spoke wheels (19-inch front and 16-inch rear diameter) and a solid black belt guard and rear sprocket.
The Harley-Davidson Smart Security System and anti-lock braking system (ABS) are factory-installed options for the Iron 1200 model.

2018 Harley Davidson Deluxe Review and Test Ride – The 2018 Deluxe receives a heart transplant in the form of the Milwaukee-Eight engine of the 107 cubic-inch variety. In its transition from the Harley touring line, the M-E gained a second counterbalancer and a wet sump. The second counterbalancer allows for the engine to be solidly-mounted to the Softail frame for a more tightly packed engine bay and a stiffer chassis. The wet sump facilitates the 2017’s under seat oil tank removal, which achieves the dual goals of relocating a heat source away from the rider and centralizing the mass of the engine. From the moment the torque-assist clutch is released, the Milwaukee-Eight engine outshines the Twin Cam. Acceleration is brisk and is a claimed 10-percent faster from 0-60mph – a figure I don’t doubt. In my two chances to ride the Deluxe (one in Wisconsin and one in California), I’ve been impressed with how well the dual balancers quell vibration. While the M-E loves being trolled along riding the torque curve, the engine feels equally at home with a higher-rpm, more sporting approach, too. However, at higher rpm, some vibration makes itself known but is not objectionable. At all rpm, in all situations, the EFI tuning remains super slick with nary a hiccup. The transmission shifts smoothly though shifting into first gear from neutral elicits the Big Twin Clunk. When it comes to sound, though, it’s hard to ignore one of the biggest benefits of having an engine that is mechanically quieter than the one it replaces. The Milwaukee-Eight’s exhaust is much throatier than the Twin Cam’s while still meeting EPA limits. That’s a change that can be appreciated each time the throttle is twisted.

NEW 2018 Yamaha Star Eluder with powerplant 1.854 cc – complete with multimedia Review. Most carry quite a bit of that beefy front-end look due to the full fairings, and that gets reinforced by the clean upper lines of the rear ends that have no visual weight to offset the mass of the front. Beemer alone has a reasonably-narrow entry due to its sporty roots, and even it carries some heft. Moving aft from the genre-defining front end, we find that all of the above meet the requisite hard-bag criteria to finish the look. Yamaha knows that you want to share the riding experience, and tosses on a saddle complete with a pillion seat and generous oh-shit handles. So does the competition, with the exception of the Dark Horse that Indian seems to think should be a solo ride.
All these rides come with some sort of ABS as standard equipment, but Yamaha sweetens the deal with a linked-brake feature that provides an extra layer of safety by automatically balancing braking efforts between the front and rear calipers.
Yamaha did just that with its 1,854 cc (113 cubic-inch) powerplant. comes geared to cruise at 75 mph at a leisurely 2,750 rpm. ’Guzzi packs the smallest mill at 1,380 cc, and predictably, it turns in the weakest numbers with only 89 pound-feet at 3,000 rpm. Indian is in the ballpark with its 1,811 cc Thunder Stroke 111 and 119 pounds of twist at three grand, but Beemer takes the cake with a whopping 129 pound-feet.

Each Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10% more torque*. The Milwaukee-Eight 107 accelerates 11 percent quicker from 0-60mph, equal to a two-to-three bike length improvement, and 11% quicker from 60-80 mph in top gear, equal to a one-to-two bike length improvement*. The Milwaukee-Eight engine offers improved rider and passenger thermal comfort due to reduced heat absorption, increased heat rejection and a redesigned exhaust system. For improved fit a new, slimmer primary drive cover and the low-profile shape of the air cleaner cover provide improved rider legroom around the engine and an easier reach to the ground for many riders. All Milwaukee-Eight powered models are fitted with an assist and slip clutch with improved hydraulic actuation and 7% less clutch lever effort.
